First day of teaching!

Phase 2, Day 4

I taught my students for the first time today! The bus came to get us at 7:30 and took us to the school. We got there before the students so I had a few minutes to get myself settled. I used my carry-on suitcase to bring school supplies. We got bags from Art for the Nations, a non-profit in Denver that gives art supplies to people serving underprivileged youth. I also snagged a lot of things from my lovely mother-in-law, who had recently cleaned out the craft bin.

Like always, the day starts with 12 hugs, one for each student. (It will be hard to come back to the U.S. and not hug everyone I see!) We played a name game, even though we know each other already. The game had you say your name, and animal that started with the same letter as your name, and make the sound of the animal! They were so creative and helped each other out. Plus, I went first and made an elephant trumpeting noise with an arm for at trunk and everything. They couldn't have done anything more embarrassing than that! I like to be the silliest and do it first, so that they are not afraid of looking silly. That took a little too long and I sort of messed up my lesson plan, but I will get on track tomorrow! We made decorations for the room because it is very plain. At 10:00 we get snack, which today was pao de quijo, cheese bread, and fruit and juice. I had mango juice because it is the best choice! Overall, the teaching went very well, but like I said, I need to make some adjustments for tomorrow.

The students got program sunglasses that were obviously popular!

IT WAS SO HOT at the school. The classrooms are each air conditioned individually, so that is fine, but the large-group events happen outside and it was killing me. When we got back to the hotel a bit before 1 p.m., everyone wanted to go to lunch. A few people went to a nearby fitness center that has food in it, and the others went to the place where we ate during the soccer game-it has an all-you-can-eat buffet, which is really rare here. Usually, it's a "kilo restaurant" where you pay by weight.  I stayed home to rest-I was too hot for anything. I wanted to go jump in the ocean, (you know, the one across the street!) but no one else did and we can't go alone...so I settled for sitting in my AC instead. I took an nap, went over some things for tomorrow..I even checked out the little work-out room. It's like a sauna and work-out all in one, because it is so hot up there that you sweat out everything! But then you can step out on the roof with the pool and catch a sea breeze! I'll take  picture tomorrow.

I took a nap and showered, then went out with a couple of the guys to an Acai shack...thing. It served Acai, the superfood, in a frozen form, almost like a slushy but smoother...layered with all different things. I got mine with chocolate granola and banana...good thing it's not super close to the hotel, because I would eat it EVERY DAY and I don't know how that works with digestion. It was so good!! It started to downpour on us and we made it back. Now a little more planning and an early bedtime-9 p.m. here!
